The UK and US study conducted by Oxford University and the University of Minnesota found that smoking tripled the chances of premature death over nine years compared to non-smokers.
The Million Women Study surveyed 1.3 million women aged 50-65 in the United States and United Kingdom. The women were enrolled into the study between 1996 and 2001, with women monitored for an average of 12 years, in which time there were 66,000 deaths.
Initially, of those that took part in the survey, 20% were smokers, 28% ex smokers and 52% had never smoked. Smokers who had given up at around the age of 30 avoided 97% of their excess risk of premature death.
The risk rose with the quantity of tobacco smoked, but even light smokers who smoked less than 10 cigarettes a day, doubled their likelihood of dying.
